Robert Henry "Bob" Wessel, 78, Forestville, passed away Monday Nov. 27, 2017 at St. Luke's Medical Center in Milwaukee. He was born July 4, 1939 in Algoma to Clarence and Edna (Schmiling) Wessel. He was baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Algoma. He attended Riverside Grade School, St. Paul's Grade School and graduated from the Algoma High School in 1957.
Bob started his own business of raising rabbits for a Chicago lab in the 4th grade. Also showed his rabbits all over the state. His favorite breed was the New Zealand Reds and he won Best of Breed several times. After high school he worked at Plumbers, Algoma Hardwoods and Carnival Guernsey. Then he worked at Kornely Dairy in Manitowoc for a number of years. That was Bob's favorite job as he made so many new friends and lived in Mishicot for three years.
In 1961 he volunteered in the US Army to serve his country. He took basic training in Fort Carson, CO and then in Fort Gordon, GA. He was always very proud to service his country. Bob then spent the rest of Tour of Duty in Germany as a Military Policeman. Upon returning home he purchased the family farm from his parents in 1964. He became the 4th Generation and received the County Farm award in 1967. Bob made many improvements in the buildings and equipment over the years and in 1982 won the Conservative Farmer of the year award for Kewaunee County.
He was very active in the Rosiere Cheese Factory and then served on several committees with Land O' Lakes. He was also a member of Greenstone Farm Credit for 50 years and served on several committee's for Greenstone. Farming was always in his blood and he was proud to grow good crops.
Bob married Suzanne Schuster in August of 1965 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay. Together they had eight children. Bob was always active in St. Paul's Church and served as President of the Congregation and served several terms on the School Board. He was proud to have their own Ushering Team with the six boys. The two girls were always active in the Lutheran Pioneers.
He was an avid Wisconsin Badger, Milwaukee Brewers and Green Bay Packer fan. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
Bob is survived by his wife Suzanne, eight children Christine (Cliff) Willea, Whitehall, MI;
Cindy (Ken) Dantoin, Forestville; Timothy (Sharon) Wessel, Forestville; Todd (Mary) Wessel, Green Bay; Robert (Lisa) Wessel, Luxemburg; Randal (Jody) Wessel, Sturgeon Bay; Patrick (Jackee) Wessel, Luxemburg; Michael (Dawn) Wessel, Brussels; 24 grandchildren Ariel Krienke, Amber Lindeman, Arryn Uhlenbrauck, Alysa Peters, Robert Wiilea, Cara Richards, Cliff Willea III, Kimberly Andres, Brooke Dantoin, Brittany Dantoin, Nathaniel Wessel, Nichole Klatt, Ryan, Ashley, Zach, Bobbi, Louie, Dylan, Bradan, Malaki, Sylvia, Grace, Ella and Tommy Wessel; ten great grand children; brothers Dick (Geri) Wessel, David Wessel; sister Laurel Wessel, sisters-in-law Wanda (Lee) Telloch, Charlotte Schneider, Gail (Doug) Greaves and Joan Wodack; many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Clarence Jr., Donald Wessel; mother and father-in-law Marvin and Myrtle Schuster, brothers and sisters-in-law Roger (Marion) Schuster, Doug (Roberta) Schuster, Ken Schneider, Gary Wodack, Dawn Wessel, and granddaughter Laura Wessel.
Family and friends may call at the SCHINDERLE FUNERAL HOME, Algoma from 4 - 8 PM, Friday Dec. 1, 2017 and after 9 AM, Sat. Dec. 2 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church until the time of services at 11 AM with Rev. Joel McKenney officiating. Full MIlitary Rites at the church. Private family burial at St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Paul's Church.
